Hereditary Breast & Ovarian Cancer Test

Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) is an inherited genetic condition where the risk for cancer is passed on from one generation to the next in a family. First Genomix offers a multi-gene panel test that screens primary and well-established genes associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, in addition to other candidate genes.

When is the test offered?

As per the National Cancer Institute, genetic testing is recommended if any of the following criteria are met:

  • Having more than two first or second-degree relatives with breast/ovarian cancer
  • Having one or more first or second-degree relatives with different cancer types (same person)
  • Having more than two first or second-degree relatives who developed cancer before 50
  • If the cancer types running in the family are breast/ovarian, colon/rectal, stomach, prostate, or pancreatic

How is the test performed?

  • Identifies at-risk family members
  • Improves chances of early detection through high-risk screening protocols
  • Allows consideration of risk-reducing prophylactic surgeries

First Genomix uses a single, comprehensive multi-gene panel test for HBOC that utilizes high-throughput NGS technology. The test covers 48 genes associated with high-risk breast and ovarian cancer cases.

In case of a positive genetic result, a patient is advised to consult with his/her respective physician to better understand available preventive options.
